◎ 聽力Listening- Al老師

  • Tip 1: Some numbers, such as 13 and 30 sound very similar, especially when spoken. Does the number sound like it ends in, “n”, as in thirteen, or, “ee”, as in thirty? This sort of numbering is regularly used in IELTS to test the listener’s ability to identify detail.
  • Tip 2: As the test progresses, the vocabulary used in the question may be different to that on the recording, although it will have the same meaning. For example, “Plants,” (written on the test paper page) becomes “Vegetation” (spoken on the recording).
  • Tip 3: A technique that is often used in IELTS listening is phrase reversal, whereby the phrase is reversed between the test paper and the recording. Example: Increased relaxation (written on the test paper page) becomes decreased stress (spoken on the recoding).
  • Tip 4: In connection with vocabulary, another common technique in IELTS listening is the use of similar sounding words, such as objectivity and subjectivity, where only one of them can be the correct answer.

  • Tip 1: A simple tip when replying to the examiner’s questions is to use different vocabulary, giving the impression that you have a wide range of vocabulary. Example: “What is your favourite food?” The word favorite could be changed to like, enjoy or love, whilst the word food could be changed to meal, dish of cuisine. The first sentence of the response could then be, “The cuisine that I love most is from Thailand”.
  • Tip 2: The answer can be further enhanced by adding a little extra information, such as when you eat this food, where you eat this food, how often you eat this food, etc.
  • Tip 3: A further way to improve the answer is to use opinion phrases, which demonstrate a high level of understanding of the subject in hand to the examiner. Examples of opinion phrases are in my opinion, as I see it, I firmly believe that, from my perspective, from my standpoint and there is no doubt in my mind.
  • Tip 4: For higher level candidates wishing to achieve high bands, a good way to improve the answer is in the use of idioms. This indicates to the examiner a mastery of higher levels of English language proficiency. If, for example, the question asked is, “Do you play any sport or take any exercise?” then idioms that could be used include, “Playing tennis keeps me as fit as a fiddle”, or, “Going swimming keeps me in shape.
  • Tip 5: It is also important to speak in the correct tense-this is a challenge for many Taiwanese students, since tenses are not used in this way in the native language. If the answer should be, “We went to the beach”, be careful not to say, “We go to the beach”.

◎ 寫作Writing應試技巧 -Eileen老師 (寫作應試技巧 — 最重要的 4 件事)

    1. 答題:
      • 寫作前的分析和組織雖僅耗時 1 到 3 分鐘不等,卻對分數影響甚鉅,因此平時即應加強練習審題、解題,參考老師教授的方法,形成一套適合自己的模式,務求運用熟練,這樣練習的好處包括:(1) 節省考試時打草稿的時間;(2) 避免寫到中途離題或失焦;(3) 確保寫到題目所要求的所有重點。
    2. 邏輯:

邏輯和連貫性是許多同學最容易忽略和失誤的地方,建議練習重點如下:

      • Task 1 – 敘述圖表內容時,注意要有「選擇」和「層次」,例如:從趨勢和特色開始,逐漸寫到細節;
      • Task 2 – 發展主體段落時,注意要有「關係」和「扣題」,亦即:每一句都和主題直接相關,且每一句之間都有邏輯關係(例如:因果關係)。
    1. 用詞:

建議利用上課內容與高分範文等資料,蒐集以下詞彙:

      • Task 1 – 描述圖表的詞彙,以及表達增減、比較等關係的句型;
      • Task 2 – 架構整篇文章的組織詞彙(oganising words),以及重要領域的基本詞彙(例如:教育類、環保類、科技類)。
        注意:孤立的詞彙對於作文是沒有用的,所以要一併蒐集詞的搭配和用法
        (例如:health awareness 這組詞通常會搭配動詞 create; promote; increase; raise,以及介係詞 among,而寫出類似這樣的句子:The government has been actively promoting health awareness among the general public.)
    1. 文法:

練習重點有二:

    • (1) 先釐清句子結構(單句、合句、複句),再求在文章中變化句型;
    • (2) 每次練習寫作後都要自行檢查、發現、更正文法錯誤,每次被批改出的錯誤也都要確實理解,避免再犯 (文法錯誤的數量往往是決定 6 分和 6.5 分的關卡,不可小覷)。

◎ 閱讀Reading應試技巧 – Eileen老師 (閱讀應試技巧 — 最重要的 4 件事)

    1. 掌握時間:

一提到閱讀測驗,許多同學最感頭痛的就是「來不及做完」,因此,平常練習時就應特別注意時間的分配及運用,建議:

      • (1) 看完文章標題、副標題或前面數行後,即可直接作題 – 閱讀測驗大多按照順序出題,因此只要找到首題出現的位置,即可往下繼續搜尋;

(2) 不須讀完整篇文章,但務必做完所有題目 – 以題目為索引,一邊找答案一邊理解文章大意,切忌在難題上浪費時間,導致錯失較簡單的題目。

    1. 熟悉題型:
      • Cambridge ESOL將閱讀測驗分為11類題型,同學在準備初期的重要工作就在熟悉這些題型的考法,並在練習中嘗試使用老師教授的解題技巧。在準備的中、後期,則應反覆運用這些技巧來解題,務求熟練,增快速度。
    2. 擴充詞彙:

閱讀測驗的文體較正式,且偏向學術領域,同學常感到詞彙量不足,閱讀起來很吃力,但面對茫茫字海,又不知從何準備起。以下建議兩個重要方向:

    • (1) 熟記最頻繁出現的學術詞彙(AWL – Academic Word List);
    • (2) 培養辨認換字(paraphrase)的能力 – 在文章中搜尋答案時,換字常是關鍵線索,例如:題目中的 marketing 在文章中可能換成 advertising,找到了類似的字,就很可能找到答案。
  1. 盡量多讀:
    • 許多同學以為反覆不斷做測驗題就會進步,其實並不盡然,除非有意識地鍛鍊技巧,否則大量做題目有時反而會帶來挫折感。所以除了測驗題外,也應盡量接觸與閱讀測驗類似的文章(例如:The Economist、National Geographic等雜誌),除了熟悉文體和提升速度外,還可以練習劃關鍵字,略讀句子與段落大意,並體會相似內容的不同表達方法。
